Comic #932

1 {scene: Head Death's desk}
1 Head Death: WHAT ARE YOU DOING? WHY DID YOU BRING THESE PIRATES TO MY OFFICE?
2 Charity Collector Guy: They're upset about being collected by me rather than a skeleton...
3 Head Death: WE'RE DEATHS! NOBODY'S EVER HAPPY TO SEE US!
4 Charity Collector Guy: ... And they demand to see a certain Mr Davy Jones...
4 Long Tom: Arrr!

Davy Jones of course refers to he of the idiomatic Locker, the old nautical term for the final resting place of those who die at sea, and not the ex-Monkee.

I considered adding a line by the Head Death in the final panel:

Charity Collector Guy: ... And they demand to see a certain Mr Davy Jones...
Head Death: THE MONKEE?
Long Tom: Arrr!
Although I think this is marginally funnier, I decided it was out of character for the Head Death, who of all people should have a decent knowledge of death-related idioms.
A reader wrote to suggest this, which I wish I had thought of myself:
Charity Collector Guy: ... And they demand to see a certain Mr Davy Jones...
Head Death: I CAN'T HELP THEM. THE MONKEES' FAME IS DEADER THAN DEAD.

2014-10-21 Rerun commentary: Davy Jones (the ex-Monkee) shuffled off this mortal coil in 2012 alas, 7 years after this comic was originally published.

Without wishing ill of him, I find it tragically amusing that perhaps in some afterlife somewhere he is constantly being hassled by the departed spirits of pirates.
