Those who know your Greek mythology might have suspected something like this.
Charon has some job. Currently, on average around 166,000 people die every day, which is about 116 every minute. Even a supernatural entity like Charon would have trouble keeping up, ferrying them all to the Underworld.
One may speculate that there are other means for people to get there, and Charon's service is kind of like the First Class version, for elite clients. Perhaps he even has a bar on board that boat.
