Mmm. Beer and cake.
Huh. Apparently the idiom "takes the cake" is used in two different ways. To describe something which is particularly bad or terrible (the way Ishmael is using it here, and the sense that I am familiar with), but also to describe something which is especially good or outstandingly excellent.
Well that really takes the cake.
