Comic #551

1 Threepio: {standing in the desert, by an escape pod with Artoo} How did I get into this mess? I really don't know how. We seem to be made to suffer. It's our lot in life.
2 Threepio: What a desolate place this is. Why, I haven't seen a place this bleak since... since...
3 {Threepio looks up in the sky and sees the distinctive double sunset}
4 Threepio: Oh bloody hell! Not Tatooine again.

They've certainly been on Tatooine enough before. It's quite astonishing that Threepio in particular doesn't recognise it. You'd think that twin sunset would be a dead giveaway.

Especially with the rising chords of Luke's theme being played by the entire string section.

2013-08-02 Rerun commentary: In my defence, this strip was written a year before Revenge of the Sith was released, and nobody really knew that C-3PO would have his memory erased at the end of that film.

The desert landscape here is simply the top of my desk, which is made of varnished chipboard. It makes a pretty cool desert sands texture.

I kind of wonder why the droids strike out across the desert in the movie. The first basic of desert survival is to stay with your vehicle. (Living in Australia, everyone learns this at the time they apply for a driving licence, as one of the fundamental road safety rules.) This makes you much, much easier to find. It also provides some shelter and potentially life saving bits of equipment that you can scavenge. If you set off across the desert, you'll end up dehydrated and dead a lot quicker, and be far less likely to ever be found.

I suppose some of these factors don't really apply to droids, but still.
