Comic #3553

1 Jane Goodall: 1 + 1 = 10
1 Mite: {same pattern in alien symbols}
2 Jane Goodall: I've made a breakthrough! He understands simple binary arithmetic.

It's often said that you can communicate with alien intelligences by starting with simple mathematical principles to establish a common baseline. I'm not sure exactly how you build up from 1+1=2 (or 1+1=10 in binary notation, as Jane Goodall demonstrates here) to the existence of cronuts and J-pop and Internet memes.

I expect it'd take a heck of a long time.
